What is cholesterol? Cholesterol is a type of fat needed to make hormones and build cells in your body. However, if your body has too much cholesterol, deposits of fat called plaque can build up in your blood vessel walls. Typically, doctors measure two types of cholesterol. LDL is your 'bad' cholesterol; the normal range is <100 mg/dl. HDL is your 'good' cholesterol; the normal range is >40 mg/dl. Why is this bad? When cholesterol is too high, this can increase your risk for heart attacks or strokes. So how do you control your cholesterol? Eat less fat. Eat more nuts, legumes, whole cereals and cocoa. Eat more white meats and fish and avoid red meat. Exercise 30 min/day. Quit smoking. Some medications your doctor may prescribe.
